Gilding
Brackets
Owner: Private.
Pair of worn grotesque brackets needed new gilding after long term storage in a damp cellar and the inexpert attention of the unqualified removed their original gilding.
Frame for "Gentleman With Riding Stick" by unknown artist
Owner: The Hepworth Wakefield
Frame for "Sunny Summer Evening in the Meadows" by T.S.Cooper
Owner: Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate Museums and Arts.
Sometime in it’s past, the frame had been completely overpainted in a gold colour, which obliterated detail, reflection and rapidly discoloured. To enhance presentation I removed the overpaint and re-gilded the surface following the original scheme (devised from sub-surface clues).
Frame for "The Rift within the Lute" by Arthur Hughes, 1861-2
Owner: Tullie House Museum, Carlisle.
The frame was suffering from the effects of age and an old overpaint. I removed the overpaint and replaced all losses in matching materials (made x-ray dense for later identification). I then followed the original gilding scheme.
Carved 18th century "Carlo Maratta" style large landscape frame
Owner: Private client.
This age ravaged frame needed cleaning and partial regilding to recover it’s splendour.
